One of the lawyers representing the Afghan people caught up in a Defence Force raid in 2010 says persisting confusion about the minutiae of the attack shows exactly why an independent inquiry is needed.
Deborah Manning says her clients have always provided a consistent account of when, where and what happened to them. The 2017 book Hit and Run claims six civilians were killed and 15 injured in a raid on two villages in Afghanistan but the New Zealand Defence Force denied the extent of the raids and disagreed on several details.
In a newly public report, NZDF admits for the first time that photographs in the book do show the raid's location. But it's denying the claims that civilians were killed, saying one man identified as an insurgent was shot dead.
It says only two shots were fired by its troops during the entire operation. Deborah Manning talks to Susie Ferguson.
