Ngaruawahia bridge fatality 'many years in the making' - KiwiRail CEO

From Morning Report, 8:23 am on 19 March 2018

An 11-year-old girl has been killed when she was hit by a freight train as she played on a bridge in the Waikato town of Ngaruawahia.

The rail bridge is a popular place for young people to play, and to jump from into the Waikato river. It's considered by many in the town as a rite of passage.

KiwiRail boss Peter Reidy tells us the accident was 'many years in the making'. He says KiwiRail and local officials have been doing a lot to keep children from using the rail bridge, but more could be done.
