Māori education: Ministry urges 'bold step' to fight bias

From Morning Report, 6:14 am on 2 May 2018

The Education Ministry has told the government it could develop a national programme targeting teachers' bias against Māori children by the end of the year. It says in a briefing paper there is significant inequity between Māori children and those from other backgrounds. The paper says it could deliver a step change in Māori achievement by building on a programme called Te Kotahitanga, which ran in some secondary schools five years ago. Myles Ferris from Te Akatea, the association of Māori school principals, told our education correspondent, John Gerritsen, change needs to happen right across the school system.
