Work with gang members to reduce crime - Jarrod Gilbert

From Morning Report, 7:41 am on 11 June 2018

As gang membership grows, there's talk of a return to the conflict of the past as gangs compete against each other. In the past six weeks, another gang, the Comancheros, was added to the official list of gangs whose patches are banned in New Zealand's government buildings.

The Comancheros have started to build up a presence here, after members were deported from Australia. But some sections of traditional gangs in New Zealand, such as the Mongrel Mob, are saying they reject some parts of the gang lifestyle, including family violence and methamphetamine.

Gang expert Jarrod Gilbert from Canterbury University told RNZ's Insight investigation into New Zealand gangs yesterday, that for the first time since the gangs emerged in this country, pockets of the movement want some change. He tells Philippa Tolley what needs to be done for change.
