DOC track upgrades won't save Tane Mahuta - scientist

A scientist working on kauri dieback says building boardwalks and upgrading tracks won't be enough to save iconic kauri like Tane Mahuta. Amanda Black says the Department of Conservation's efforts to stop people tracking the disease through Waipoua forest are commendable. ut she says the pathogen can sniff out kauri roots and move towards them through water - all by itself. Dr Black told RNZ Northland reporter Lois Williams that closing the popular tracks would reduce risk and buy time for scientists to create a crisis plan.
