Tree hut under threat for not meeting building code

Is a tree hut really a house? And, if it is, should a bit of backyard DIY have to comply with the building code? That's the argument happening in Mosgiel where the Dunedin City Council has told a family they need to remove a treehouse from their garden because it does not "meet building code requirements around structural integrity and safety from falls''. The Council were alerted to the tree hut by the neighbours with a two storey house, who complained over a "loss of privacy". That was not upheld, but the Council then said it had to be pulled down anyway, as it doesn't meet Building Code requirements. But Trevor Norman who built the tree hut for his three grandsons is hopeful it can be saved
