The police are defending their use of tasers to subdue an Auckland man who died in hospital three days later. Officers were called to a house in Freemans Bay on Sunday where a 76-year-old man was being violently assaulted. The police say 29 -year-old Alo Ngata was tasered by two police officers when he moved towards them in a threatening manner. His death is now being investigated by the coroner, WorkSafe, and the Independent Police Conduct Authority. Superintendant Karyn Malthus [MAL-thuss] told media yesterday afternoon she stands by her officer's actions after watching helicopter footage of the event. However, she wouldn't commit to releasing the police footage to the public. Auckland lawyer Marie Dyhrberg talks to Jane Patterson.
