From Morning Report, 8:25 am on 17 August 2018

There's been an incredible weather display off the west coast of the North Island, with thousands of lightning strikes illuminating the dawn. MetService says the thunderstorms were concentrated on the coast from Wellington to Waikato. In Tokoroa, lightning hit a tree which caused it to explode and catch fire and a nearby gas main was ruptured, leaving gas leaking. The storm also brought power lines came down, causing a power outage in the central North Island town. MetService meteorologist Ravi Kandula talks to Guyon Espiner.
