Greens don't need to 'reinvent wheel' on tyre disposal

From Morning Report, 8:27 am on 20 August 2018

The Green Party has announced a plan for cracking down on the number of tyres being dumped in landfill.

About 4 million tyres are replaced each year in New Zealand and according to David Vinsen, chief executive of the Vehicle Imports Association, many aren't disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

He says he's frustrated to hear of another working group, when work was already done by the last government under MP Nick Smith.

"We spent a lot of time and money on it - various associations and businesses. It wasn't an easy or comfortable initiative to get together.

"I cannot understand the need to go back and reinvent the wheel. It's all sitting ready to go. All they have to do is say 'yes, used tyres are a priority product' - which means a lot of legislative support comes around that definition."

He tells Guyon Espiner they've got the report, recommendations, even personnel to deal with tyre disposal. "We don't need another working group," he says.
