Lombok rattled by big aftershock, Pacific hit by rare quake

The Indonesian island of Lombok has been rocked by two more major earthquakes within hours overnight. A 6.3 magnitude tremor was recorded early in the day that caused a landslide on Mount Rinjani and caused damage to local buildings. That was followed by a 6.9 magnitude quake at 3am New Zealand timejust twenty-kilometres below the surface. Both come after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the island earlier this month, killing more than 460 people and displacing thousands more. Meanwhile Fiji and Tonga were rocked by an 8.2 magnitude quake at a depth of 580 kilometres below the earth's surface. The quake was so deep it didn't cause a tsunami and only minor damage was reported in Tonga. To discuss the quakes is Victoria University of Wellington's professor of geophysics, Martha Savage.
