Wellingtonians to pay for broken Len Lye sculpture

Wellington ratepayers will be footing the bill for a stunt that left a popular Len Lye Scuplture on Wellington's waterfront snapped in two. A bystander captured the moment a man attempted to climb the twelve-metre Water Whirler - a pole which shakes and gyrates when activated by a button. But the pole bent perilously close to the water before breaking under the strain. The man was taken to hospital with a head injury. Wellington's mayor Justin Lester says the council will pay for the artwork to be repaired. Sue Elliott is the chair of the Wellington Sculpture Trust. She talks to Philippa Tolley.
