Govt hires lawyers to police truck safety after NZTA failures

The government has put Auckland lawyers Meredith Connell in charge of policing the safety of heavy road vehicles because the Transport Agency was doing such a poor job. The agency was castigated yesterday by the government for not enforcing proper standards of companies that certify trucks, buses and other vehicles. The agency's chief executive Fergus Gammie says he won't be stepping down. Phil Pennington has been investigating this for months and joins us with the details.
