Ngāpuhi elder wants women to take charge of Treaty process

From Morning Report, 6:16 am on 12 December 2018

A Kaikohe kaumātua says it's time for women to take charge of steering Ngāpuhi towards a Treaty settlement. About 70 percent of hapū have voted "no" to a new mandate model, put together by a Ministerial working group over the past six months. But Ted Wihongi says although the vote was overwhelming, the hapū have taken many positives from the process and want to build on the momentum it's created. And he thinks it's time for the women of Ngāpuhi to lead the charge. Mr Wihongi says Ngāpuhi hapū leaders will meet on Thursday to plan a major hui in January to map out a new plan to present to the Minister of Treaty Negotiations, Andrew Little.
