Brexit: UK given 'get out of jail free' card

From Morning Report, 8:45 am on 12 December 2018

The European Court of Justice has ruled that Britain can cancel Brexit without the consent of the other EU member states. The judges say a country is free to change its mind until the withdrawal process is complete, as long as such a decision is constitutionally valid in Britain. They handed down their decision yesterday, just one day before the British Parliament was to vote on the proposed exit deal, although on Tuesday Theresa May unexpectedly delayed the vote. Susie Ferguson speaks with Jo Maugham, a barrister and director of the Good Law Project, and one of the petitioners who took the case to the ECJ. He says the ruling presents a 'get out of jail free' card for the government.
