New Plymouth standoff: Man arrested after 11 hours

From Morning Report, 7:10 am on 4 February 2019

One person is in custody after an 11 hour standoff with armed police at a house in New Plymouth. Police responded to a family harm call-out in the suburb of Spotswood just after 10am on Sunday. Streets were cordoned off and residents were warned to stay inside. RNZ spoke to people inside the cordon, who described it as a hostage situation. The police reported that one person left the house during the afternoon while another remained. Jason Fox, who lives about 70 metres away, heard a young man in the house yelling and screaming at the police and was believed to have a gun. Mr Fox says the scene was winding down at about 9pm. RNZ Taranaki reporter Robin Martin is at the scene on the corner of Paritutu Road and Marama Crescent.
