Was Afghan involvement about currying American favour?

The author of a new book on the break-up of the ANZUS alliance says New Zealand went into Afghanistan to help re-establish its security relationship with the United States, a claim which is disputed by a former Labour Defence Minister, during part of the Afghan deployment, Phil Goff.
