One of the most expensive items on a musician's tour itinery is transporting band and gear across the Cook Strait.
KiwiRail is helping out by allowing local bands and musicians to "sing for their sailing". So far over 250 local bands have paid for their trip on The Interislander by performing for surprised passengers.
Kirsten Johnstone takes to the water to talk to some of them.
At one, ex-pat Russian producer and vinyl enthusiast DJ Vadim checks in from a New Zealand holiday, to tell us about some local collaborations he's cooking up, touring with his wife and musical partner Yara Bravo, and to spin a new tune.
And young Auckland songwriter Lydia Cole drops by to sing us songs from her debut EP.
