Music 101 for Saturday 20 June 2015

This week we invited people to have some colouring-in fun, by re-imagining Dave Dobbyn’s signature 'Loyal' jersey. Here are some of the contributions.

2015 Pacific Music Awards
The 2015 Pacific Music Awards went down in Manukau City last Saturday, with Herbs’ legacy recognised with Lifetime Achievement Award award, Smashproof scooping two trophies, and Southside music stalwarts Cydel awarded three Tuis. RNZI’s Indira Moala was in amongst at the Vodafone Events Centre - she reports back from Pacific music’s big night out.

Dave Dobbyn and The Phoenix Foundation
Dave Dobbyn has enlisted The Phoenix Foundation’s Sam Scott and Luke Buda as producers for his forthcoming LP. Yadana Saw heads to one of their intensive recording workshops to get a fly-on-a-wall perspective of an album in the making.

Daughn Gibson
The music of Josh Martin aka Daughn Gibson (a play on country crooner Don Gibson) is as hard to pin down as the characters in his songs. Steeped in the Gothic tales and cutting observations of blues and country traditions, he distorts these familiar forms through a lens of dance music and sampling culture.  Emma Smith talks with Martin about the runaway success of his debut, All Hell, and his latest work Carnation, which sees him work alongside Earth producer, Randall Dunn.

Daniel Johns
Best known for his two-decade tenure with Newcastle NSW alt-rock outfit Silverchair, Daniel Johns has struck out solo on Talk, with a brand new electronic R&B infused sound and new musical partners. Those writing and production partners include local talent: Die! Die! Die!’s Andrew Wilson and Joel Little among them. Johns talks to Sam Wicks about his Kiwi collaborators.

Hiatus Kaiyote
Hiatus Kaiyote have announced two September dates in Auckland and Wellington. Emma Smith talks to frontwoman Nai Palm about their impending visit.

Boycrush
At any given point in time Alistair Deverick can be found behind a drumkit, alongside Neil Finn, Anika Moa, The Ruby Suns, Lawrence Arabia or The Carnivorous Plant Society. Take away the drums and Alistair can be found making electronic pop as Boycrush. Having just released his second EP Girls On Top,  Alistair talks with Zac Arnold about the influence of cheddar cheese and his hesitant steps towards dance music.

The Secret Life of Track Lists
Track listing – or the process of ordering songs on an album – is one of those things that, when done well, won’t be noticed. Melody Thomas looks into the history of track sequencing and speaks with New Zealand musicians and music minds, including Nick Bollinger, Te Awanui Reeder and The Phoenix Foundation's Luke Buda and Tom Callwood, about the difficult, intuitive and sometimes fraught process.

1:12 Records
For the past three years 1:12 Records have been pressing and releasing albums from Grey Lynn locals Gaytime, The Drab Doo-Riffs, Las Tetas and Cool Runnings. Zac Arnold meets 1:12 Records' founders and some of the characters responsible for the ruckus.
