VIDEO PREMIERE: 'Mechanical Bull' by Stella Donnelly

From RNZ Music, 7:55 am on 8 March 2018

The new vid for 'Mechanical Bull', by Australia's Stella Donnelly is a confronting take on the objectification of women. It was made by the director responsible for Aldous Harding's 'Blend', 'Imagining My Man', and 'Horizon' videos: Charlotte Evans.

Stella chose to make the 'Mechanical Bull' vid with NZ director Charlotte Evans, after seeing her work for Aldous Harding. The video's cast is all Kiwi too, and includes Billy T Award-winning comedian Hamish Parkinson and Outrageous Fortune's Wesley Dowdell.

Stella Donnelly is building a name for herself in the Australian folk-rock scene. She's just signed with US indie label Secretly Canadian, whose roster includes Suuns, Antony and the Johnsons, Jens Lekman and fellow Australian Alex Cameron.

“The song, 'Mechanical Bull', is dedicated to people who work in hospitality who have to deal with customers, especially drunk ones, harassing them and making objectifying comments,” says Donnelly. “I wrote this about my experience working in bars and it was a nice way to release some of the frustration I had!”

“After seeing Charlotte Evans' work with Aldous Harding, it was a no-brainer for me to want to work with her and her team over in New Zealand for my 'Mechanical Bull' video idea," says Stella.

'Mechanical Bull' is from Stella's debut EP Thrush Metal. Listen on Bandcamp:
