Nakita grew up in Christchurch, but like many aspiring musicians has found herself living in Auckland.

“My management [was] up here and I found myself every weekend flying up for a band practise or interview and I realised this doesn’t make sense.

“I was part of an artist development [programme] with Parachute music since I was thirteen and have had management since I was fifteen or sixteen. Moving up was totally the right decision.”

With artist development starting at such a young age, it’s hardly surprising that Nakita is very self-aware both about her music and image with her new EP signalling somewhat of a reinvention.

“It’s a way of developing into the sound I feel like is more me now. I feel my last album was very much ‘I’m sixteen and I want this to be very poppy. I’m a little bit moody, I’m a little bit happy, I’m trying to spread a really good message right now.'

“Now I’ve kind of moved into what my life is actually about. What’s happening in my life right now? What am I learning? Let me tell you.

“It’s about realising I’m independent now. I have to figure things out for myself now. I want t get that across to everyone. I really want people to listen to each individual song and hear the message in each.”

Nakita’s new EP Vision is out now.
