Recording engineer Steve Garden started Rattle Records with Keith Hill and Tim Gummer in 1991.

Rattle can be defined by both the caliber of musicians it chooses to work with, and by its eclectic repertoire, which other  labels might consider lacked sufficient commercial return to take a risk on. It is a diverse catalogue which includes jazz, acoustic fusion, improvised music, Te Reo and classical albums from Aotearoa. It is unapologetically art-focused and undoubtedly culturally significant.

Trevor Reekie chats to Steve Garden.

The debut album from 17-year-old pianist Lixin Zhang, Play, released on Rattle shot to number one on RNZ Concert’s Classical Chart this year. Listen to Lixin Zhang in conversation with Eva Radich for Upbeat here.
