Live in session: Kimbra, unplugged

From RNZ Music, 9:41 am on 15 November 2018

New Zealand pop singer Kimbra performs an acoustic version of ‘Everybody Knows’ from her latest album Primal Heart, live at Neil Finn's Roundhead Studios.

'Everybody Knows' was the first single from Kimbra's latest album Primal Heart. She told one publication that she'd "moved to New York, and there’s a new boldness and sense of directness that I’m looking for as an artist.”

“I think in writing this song, I kind of uncovered some of that energy and wanted it to be the first message to the fans. The song is definitely about awakening to the light, in some way, or to some sense of truth and justice."

Late last month Kimbra followed her album up with an EP called Primal Heart: Reimagined. It sees four of her songs interpreted acoustically using double bass, vibraphone, saxophone, clarinet, lap steel and acoustic guitar.

The EP was produced by Lars Horntveth of Jaga Jazzist, and recorded at Red Bull Studios in New York, where Kimbra now resides.

She performed a special acoustic set at Neil Finn's Roundhead Studios in Auckland, with upright bass player Spencer Zahn.

Kimbra was chosen as the support act for David Byrne's run of New Zealand shows this week, presenting her songs in the synth-heavy, beat-driven pop style of the original album. She also conducted David Byrne's only New Zealand interview.
