RNZ Music is proud to present the new video from rising Kiwi-Rwandan rapper Blaze the Emperor. ‘Before’ is a jazz and soul-infused hip hop track with a vid that’s dripping with luxury.
Kiwi-Rwandan rapper Blaze the Emperor started making music in 2011 as part of Auckland hip hop collective, Beneath The Hype. He then embarked on a solo career collaborating with fellow Kiwi-Rwandan, Hamiltonian, and MC Raiza Biza and his AmmoNation collective.
Blaze has toured New Zealand, Europe and China both as a solo act and as part of AmmoNation. He’s released several singles, as well as a solo EP Western Heights, which came out in 2017, debuting at #1 on the iTunes hip hop album charts.
The 28-year-old MC says his track ‘Before’ is “a social commentary on relationships in 2019”. Written from the perspectives of both partners in the early stages of a relationship, “It’s a reminder that there are always two sides to a story and that things aren’t always what they appear to be at first glance.”
The video is boujee-inspired, dripping with luxury and opulence. Shot by AmmoNation's in-house videographer Connor Pritchard, and directed by Blaze the Emperor himself, the video was filmed at the Willowbrook Park private estate - a luxurious mansion over-looking rural Hamilton.
