11:06 Jazz Time - Art Blakey
Art Blakey was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and began playing the piano as a teenager. In the 1940’s he took up drums and worked with some of the most popular jazz orchestras of the time. The concept of the Jazz Messengers began in 1947; however the first recording of the group were not until 1954 with Horace Silver as its leader.
In 1956 Blakey took over the name and recorded as Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers until the end of his career. The roster of the Jazz Messengers is a who’s who in modern jazz history. Many of the popular jazz icons of today were disciples and students of Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers. He received many awards during his long career, including three Grammys.
