The Doppler effect (or the Doppler shift) is the change in frequency or wavelength of a wave for an observer who is moving relative to the wave source. It is named after the Austrian physicist Christian Doppler, who described the phenomenon in 1842.

This week Country Life meets Raquel Walker and her equestrian performance coach Jeanette Garrett, who has created a programme for the special needs rider to enable her to compete in Special Olympic events. Training is currently held every week at an equestrian ring in the middle of a Motueka kiwifruit orchard that was badly damaged by Cyclone Gita.
