09:05 NZ's high rate of drug recalls

Seven different drugs - including medicines for heart disease, diabetes, weight loss and asthma - have been recalled this year, affecting around 50,000 people. Pharmacists are crying foul, saying they're being diverted from their work because new requirements mean they have to phone every affected patient - time they are not compensated for. Before this year, the last patient-level recall was about 20 years ago - and pharmacists say MedSafe - which makes the decisions about drug recalls - has its bar set too low.

Annabel Young, chief executive of the Pharmacy Guild; Ian Johnson, owner of two South Auckland pharmacies (Johnson's Pharmacy Otara and one in Papatoetoe) and president of the Pharmacy Guild. He is taking GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to court in a civil case over his costs of about $400 incurred in the recall of the drug Marevan in January; and Dr Harry Pert, President of the Royal NZ College of General Practitioners.
