Rest home residents in Christchurch have been left out of pocket by their retirement villages taking up red-zone offers and the government has refused their request to compensate them. The 2011 quakes destroyed almost 200 homes in three retirement villages.

Plans to build a memorial garden in Dunedin's Anzac Ave to honour the actions of conscientious objectors have caused ripples with the local RSA.
Archibald Baxter, a Dunedin man, and 13 other objectors were sent to the frontline in France, tied to posts in the open, and forced into bombarded trenches.
The Archibald Baxter Memorial Trust has asked the Dunedin City Council for permission to build a memorial on Anzac Avenue to remember these and other conscientious objectors.
The local RSA says it is not opposed to the memorial but Anzac Avenue is not an appropriate place for it.
Dr Jacky Bowring is Professor of Landscape Architecture at Lincoln University, who's been involved in the design of a range of memorials. She's also the author of a book called A Field Guide to Melancholy.
Dr Bowring has also been involved in discussions about the Canterbury Earthquake Memorial, which will honour all those affected, and form part of the greater Christchurch recovery.

New Zealand-born scientist Professor Terry Collins was the first person in the world to teach green chemistry. He says we have to stop using technologies without any apparent concern for their environmental impact. He is the director of the Institute for Green Science (IGS) at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and currently a guest at the Dunedin Science Festival where he will be discussing his work.
