09:05  New data released on surgical mesh

ACC has released a detailed review of surgical mesh-related claims from July 2005 to June of this year. It shows it that 13-point-2 million dollars has been paid in treatment injury claims - 60 per cent for operations to repair pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence, 32 per cent for hernia repairs and 8 per cent for other mesh surgeries. The advocacy group for mesh victims, Mesh Down Under, has been lobbying the government for years for a full inquiry and a register of mesh users. For the first time representatives of the group will be part of a joint meeting of officials from the Health Ministry, ACC and medical specialists tomorrow, Friday 20th October, in Wellington.
