A leading education academic says teacher trainees are unprepared to offer true inclusive education. Dr Gill Rutherford, Senior Lecturer in Education and Disability Studies at the University of Otago's College of Education tells Lynn Freeman the standard of teacher training in New Zealand is inadequate, and the right to inclusive education must be enshrined in law.  A recent survey shows 78 percent of New Zealand schools are "mostly inclusive", up from around 50 percent in 2009. Dr Rutherford is joined by Giovanni Tiso of the Inclusive Education Action Group, whose two children are enjoying an inclusive education at Berhampore School in Wellington, but thinks this should be the rule rather than the exception; and Sally Thomas who is the National Co-Ordinator of the New Zealand Foundation for Conductive Education, an education programme for people with disabilities.

The Prime Minister and Arts Minister Jacinda Ardern says she's concerned about reports that the publicly funded national dance company, the Royal New Zealand Ballet, will not include any of this year's graduates from the New Zealand School of Dance. RNZ has been told that so far no young dancers from this year's graduates have taken up contracts with the ballet company. Last week a number of personal grievance cases were brought against the ballet company. The Ministry of Culture and Heritage is reporting to Ms Ardern on the situation with the company, which received nearly $5.4 million in public funding. Lynn Freeman talks with veteran dance critic Jennifer Shennan.
