Pests in the Auckland region, including plant, animal and pathogen pests, like kauri die back, have changed in the past decade, so Auckland Council is looking at updating what it does. It's reviewing its Pest Management Strategy, including a period of public consultation, which has just closed. One of the sticky issues, as regards cats, is the lack of a clear demarcation of what is a 'pest cat' and what is someone's 'pet cat'. Dr Imogen Bassett is the Biosecurity Principal Advisor at Auckland council. The University of Auckland's Dr Margaret Stanley specialises in urban ecology and has been investigating the impact domestic cats on biodiversity.
