09:05  Thai cave rescue: the difficult options ahead

Lynn Freeman talks with Andy Eavis, who is one of the world's best-known cave explorers, Honorary President of the World Caving Association, and the former president of the British Caving Association about the cave rescue operation underway in Thailand. He knows two British divers John Volanthen and Rick Stanton, who were first to reach the boys.

09.20 Pasifika mothers & children gambling

A new report suggests Pasifika youth and their mothers need support to stop the increasing problem of gambling.  The just released study, funded by the Ministry of Health and carried out by AUT shows more than half of 14-year olds have gambled at least once. Over 50 percent of Pasifika mothers in the study gamble in casinos, on Lotto and scratch cards. The research is part of a longitudinal Pacific Islands Families Study, following 923 mothers, and 931 of their children born in 2000.   Director of the PIF Study Dr El-Shadan Tautolo speaks to Lynn Freeman.

09:30 GP's plea to parents: save your kids from disfiguring cancer

Cases of head and neck cancer are increasing at a faster rate than other cancers, yet a cure for one of the causes is being turned down too often, according to Whangarei doctor Andrew Miller. In younger patients especially, HPV infection has recently emerged as an important cause of what can be a disfiguring disease.   HPV immunisation, which is funded for everyone aged between the ages of 9 and 26 - eliminates that risk, as well as the risk of cervical, anal cancer, vaginal cancer, & vulvar cancer but the uptake is lower in New Zealand than in Australia and the UK. Dr Andrew Miller is a GP and works for Northland DHB  as a Sexual Health Medical Officer. He is also recovering from stage 4 HPV related head and neck cancer.

11:20 Youth Inspire: off benefits & benefiting society

Community project Youth Inspire is the result of a cry for help.  The Wainuiomata community, just outside Wellington, were seeing young people leaving school and claiming benefit. Now, thanks to the Youth Inspire initiative, four hundred jobs have been secured - in retailing, hospitality, building, also at a library. Two hundred businesses in the Hutt Valley are taking part. Not only is it slowing down staff turn-over but recent analysis shows a social return on investment of $11.60 for every dollar invested.  Matt Reid is chair of Youth Inspire.  He talks to Lynn Freeman about getting young people off benefits and into jobs, and keeping them there.  He is joined by Jazmine Kupenga, who has found work after years of being on a benefit.
