Five generations of fruit farming in Central Otago

From Nine To Noon, 11:21 am on 27 September 2016

Five generations of the Hinton family have farmed in Central Otago

And they have been diversifying how they use the land that has been in the family since 1910.

The orchards produce apricots, cherries, nectarines, peaches and plums, and over the years a dairy farm and a vineyard has been added to the portfolio.

The fruit is grown for local supermarkets and fruit stores and also for export.

Nigel and Elisabeth run the business along with their son Howie and daughter in law, Sarah.

The operation was featured on the first Country Calendar episode 50 years ago and the acreage has grown significantly since then.

The family's endeavours on the land have also been showcased in the television programme's book, Country Calendar - stories from our rural heartland .
