From campfire tales to book award shortlist

Far north school principal Fraser Smith often struggled to find material to engage the Maori children in his rural community, particularly boys. So he did something about it, with his debut novel Awatea's Treasure, which has been shortlisted for the NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults best first book award. The book grew from stories told to children on school camp and in classrooms.
