She has been researching gestational diabetes and developing potential treatments to prevent it. Gestational diabetes occurs when a woman has high blood sugar during pregnancy - and the condition affects around 10 percent of New Zealand mothers. It can lead to short term and long term health issues for both the mother and the child.
