Teachers relying too much on Reading Recovery programme

A new report looking at what works in primary school classrooms and what doesn't is warning teachers not to rely on the $40 million a year Reading Recovery programme for struggling young readers. The Education Review Office's Evaluation at a Glance: A Decade of Assessment in New Zealand Primary Schools - Practice and trends report, says the intensive reading programme is less successful for Maori and Pacific students, and those from low decile schools, and that the gains seen during Reading Recovery may not be sustained.
