Moves to modernise the four decade old law that dictates how couples' assets are divided if they split up, will make significant in-roads this week. On Thursday the Law Commission, which is currently reviewing the Property Relationships Act, will publish a paper outlining its preferred approach before making its final recommendations in 2019. Under current law it's a 50-50 split if the couple is married, in a civil union or a de facto relationship, but new research, being presented today, has found that the majority of New Zealanders agree the law needs to be reformed.
