Relationship property law 'out of date'

Moves to modernise the four decade old law that dictates how couples' assets are divided if they split up, will make significant in-roads this week. On Thursday the Law Commission, which is currently reviewing the Property Relationships Act, will publish a paper outlining its preferred approach before making its final recommendations in 2019. Under current law it's a 50-50 split if the couple is married, in a civil union or a de facto relationship, but new research, being presented today, has found that the majority of New Zealanders agree the law needs to be reformed. Associate Professor Nicola Taylor who is the Director of the Children's Issues Centre at Otago University, and Professor Mark Henaghan from Otago University's Law Faculty talk to Kathryn Ryan.
