World weather modelling & NIWA's supercomputer

From Nine To Noon, 9:34 am on 4 March 2019

Kathryn discusses the latest developments in world-wide weather forecasting, and New Zealand's role in it, with Jon Petch, a senior executive from the UK Met Office.

New Zealand is one of five countries combining forces to predict weather patterns around the globe, thanks to NIWA's supercomputer. An international conference on the future of weather forecasting and climate modelling is taking place in Wellington this week, focusing on the UK Unified Model Partnership, which has been used for predicting the majority of the world's weather for the past five years and allows forecasters to make predictions from hours out, to centuries.
