From May through to July, off the coast of South Africa, the right combination of currents and the physical barrier of continental Africa helps create one of the largest species congregations on Earth, the Sardine Run. The biomass of the spawning pilchards is believed to rival that of Africa's other great journey, East Africa's wildebeest migration.
