He was the first Fiji-born Indian Judge to be appointed to the District Court bench in New Zealand, serving in Manukau, our country’s third largest city holding the most diverse ethnic communities. Dr Ajit Swaran Singh is a White Ribbon Ambassador and recipient of numerous national and international awards, including the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, the highest civilian award bestowed on persons of Indian origins. Judge Singh represented the Fiji Government in numerous court cases including a controversial abortion trial in 1992 that changed Fiji’s constitution. But this man started life with very humble beginnings.
