We are more microbe than human. With 100 million bacterial cells living in and on our body, the quantity, range and distribution of this microbiome qualifies it as another organ whose functions are only beginning to understand. Veronika Meduna meets Malaghan Institute scientist Mike Berridge who argues that our gut bacteria not only help us digest our food, but have a direct influence on our brain, moods and behaviour.
