John Scarry is an Auckland-based structural engineer operating independently of the major consultancies. He believes standards of engineering practice in New Zealand are falling and has voiced concerns about design and construction practices and their effects on building safety.

Richard Powers explores the effects of modern science and technology in his novels, and his psychological thriller, The Echo Maker (Random House, ISBN: 9780099506027), won the 2006 National Book Award for Fiction. He returns to New Zealand for a master class for MA fiction students at Victoria University, and will deliver the presentation Mind and Matter from 1:00pm on 28 July at the National Library Auditorium in Wellington, as part of the Writers on Mondays series.

Janet Hunt is a graphic designer and writer based on Waiheke Island. Her first book, Hone Tuwhare: A Biography, was published in 1998, and her next book, A Bird in the Hand: Keeping New Zealand Wildlife Safe, won the non-fiction section and the Book of the Year award at the 2004 New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children and Young Adults. Her most recent book, Wetlands of New Zealand: A Bitter-Sweet Story (Random House, ISBN 9781869419042), won the Environment category and the Montana Medal for Non-fiction at the 2008 Montana New Zealand Book Awards.

James Boyce is a Carmelite priest. He is associate professor and chair of the faculty of arts and music at Fordham University, the Jesuit University of New York, with a special interest in medieval music, chant, and liturgy. Reverend Boyce is visiting this country as a guest of the New Zealand School of Music (a partnership between Massey and Victoria Universities) to give a presentation on Gregorian chant in the regular public musicology lecture series The Music Forum.
