8:15 Sophie Elmhirst

British writer Sophie Elmhirst is a contributing editor at Harper’s Bazaar, and also writes for the Guardian, the Financial Times,, the Observer, Stylist and Aeon. She will talk about Welcome to the Death Café, her recent article for Prospect magazine.

8:30 Maziar Bahari: Iran, imprisonment and education

Iranian Canadian journalist and film-maker Maziar Bahari is the author of Then They Came For Me, a memoir about his imprisonment, beating and interrogation in Iran for over 100 days in 2009. The memoir was the inspiration for Rosewater, a feature film directed by Jon Stewart of The Daily Show. In 2013, Bahari launched the Persian/English website Iranwire.com, which focuses on current affairs, culture and politics. He is also involved in Journalism for Change, a platform devoted to citizen journalism, and in the worldwide campaigns Education is Not a Crime and Journalism is Not a Crime. He is visiting New Zealand this week as part of a global campaign leading up to Education is Not a Crime Day on 27 February. His documentary film To Light a Candle – about the denial of education to Bahá’ís in Iran – will also have its New Zealand premiere while he is here.

 

9:05 Jim Al-Khalili and Johnjoe McFadden: quantum biology

Jim Al-Khalili is Professor of Physics and Professor of Public Engagement in Science at the University of Surrey, and president of the British Humanists Association. Johnjoe McFadden is Professor of Molecular Genetics, and Associate Dean (International) at the University of Surrey. Both have written books, and they collaborated on the new title, Life on the Edge: The Coming Age of Quantum Biology (Bantam, ISBN: 978-0-59306-932-5).

10:05 Howard Moody: music and education

Howard Moody is a British baroque continuo specialist, a composer, and conductor. He is visiting New Zealand for the Opera in a Days Bay Garden production of La Calisto by Cavalli (11-14 February), where he will lead the Baroque orchestra from the chamber organ and harpsichord.

11:05 Anthony McCarten: love, and the theory of everything

Anthony McCarten is a New Zealand author, film director and screenwriter. He wrote the screenplay for The Theory of Everything, based on the 2007 memoir by Jane Hawking, wife of physicist Stephen Hawking. He is also a producer for the film, which has five Academy Award nominations, for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor (Eddie Redmayne), Best Actress (Felicity Jones) and Best Original Score (Jóhann Jóhannsson). It opens nationwide in New Zealand on 5 February.
