Evan Thomas was a writer, correspondent, and editor for 33 years at Time and Newsweek, and has taught writing and journalism at Harvard and Princeton. He is the author of nine books; his new biography is Being Nixon: A Man Divided (Random House).

9:05 Simon Denny: power and secrets
Simon Denny is a New Zealand artist based in Berlin. He represented New Zealand at the 2015 Venice Biennale with his work, Secret Power, installed at the Monumental Rooms of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana (Tuesday-Sunday 10am-6pm), and the Arrivals Lounge at Marco Polo Airport (24/7). Four of the art works from Secret Power have been acquired by Te Papa, and will be added to the museum’s collection after the Biennale exhibition closes in November.

9:35 Edgar Cahn: time banking
Professor Edgar S. Cahn was former counsel and speech writer to Robert F. Kennedy, and is a legal professor at the University of the District of Columbia. He is best known as the originator of time banking, a way to value the contributions that people make to rebuilding community and to ‘co-producing’ public services. He spoke on 3 September in Christchurch as a guest of the Lyttelton Harbour TimeBank, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary.

Jennifer Palmer is a Year 12 student at Orewa College, north of Auckland. Her presentation, Synthetic Biology – Engineering the Future, won her the Secondary category and the Premier Award at the 2015 Sir Paul Callaghan EUREKA! Awards, which recognise excellence of communication in science, technology, engineering and innovation.
10:20 Giles Yeo: obesity and genetics
Dr Giles Yeo is Principal Research Associate and Director of Genomics/Transcriptomics at the University of Cambridge Institute of Metabolic Science, where he studies food intake and obesity. He is one of the experts featured in the BBC Horizon special, What’s the Right Diet For You?, and visited New Zealand to deliver a keynote address at Queenstown Research Week, Australiasia’s premier annual biological sciences event.
11:05 Philip Rhodes: playing evil
New Zealand baritone Phillip Rhodes is based in Cardiff, and is a protégé of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. He is returning here to play the role of Baron Scarpia, the violent and corrupt Chief of Police, in the NZ Opera production of Puccini’s Tosca, in Auckland (17-27 September) and Wellington (10-17 October).
11:45 Kate’s Klassic: A Question of Upbringing
Kate Camp has published five collections of poems, most recently Snow White’s Coffin (VUP). She will discuss the 1951 novel A Question of Upbringing, the first volume of A Dance to the Music of Time by Anthony Powell.
