In the aftermath of the Irish government's announcement that it will hold a referendum on abortion, up to 50,000 marchers took to the streets of Dublin, calling for free, safe and legal abortions in the republic. Presently, abortions are banned in almost all circumstances and the constitution's eighth amendment gives a foetus the status of a citizen.
