Oscar Natzka - One Hundred Years On

The internationally renowned New Zealand bass Oscar Natzka was born near Te Awamutu on 15th June 1912, one hundred years ago this week. In his Saturday night programme, host Peter Fry takes a look at the brief but spectacular career of one of this country's greatest musical ambassadors.
After training in Britain Natzka became a hugely popular recording artist there and sang in Opera at Covent Garden. During World War II he joined the Canadian Navy and toured with their Meet the Navy show.
After the war he carved himself a distinguished operatic career in America but aged 39 and at the height of his vocal and dramatic powers, he was felled by a stroke.
On Saturday evening, after the ten o’clock news, Peter Fry will pay tribute to Oscar Natzka with a musical memory of the brief but illustrious career of this extraordinary singer.
