In this “From the Back Country” programme Arapawa Island residents and fishermen Joe and Heather Heberley, recall the event. They talk about the part they played in the rescue of passengers from the sinking ship and the way the rescue was coordinated by local people. Joe raises questions about the course taken by the ship and the lack of a mayday call from the ship itself. They note that nearly all the baches in the area ended up with some deck chairs from the Mikhael Lermontov.
