Spectrum joins Lance and Ruth Shaw on a trip to Breaksea Island, 3 hours by sea out from Doubtful Sound.

The journey takes place on 'Breaksea Girl' an ocean-going motor-sailing steel ketch owned and operated by Lance and Ruth Shaw of Fiordland Ecology Holidays.

Twenty years earlier, Lance skippered the original Department of Conservation boat used for a pioneering project which made Breaksea Island one of the first places in the world to become rat free. DOC later withdrew funding for the project but Ruth and Lance Shaw decided to continue to visit Breaksea to monitor skink and weevil populations and to share the story with interested tourists.
