Menz Shed

Women socialize more easily than men, especially older men living alone. It's natural for mature women to involve themselves in clubs and activities but men tend to huddle in their inner-city bed-sits, often afflicted with health problems such as depression and alcoholism resulting from loneliness.

Wellington's Menz Shed, a City Council initiative offers a stimulating and convivial environment where men can learn or pass on skills and at the same time provide a community service. They repair donated furniture for refugees which would otherwise end up in the tip, or carry out repairs in a school playground. They are always on the look-out for second hand tools, drills, saws, lathes, etc.

Speakers turn up at the Shed. They may talk about how to make pottery or give tips on prostate health.
