Hunter Shaw

A story in pictures: see photographs from Hunter Shaw's life.

Nobody knows Fiordland quite like Hunter Shaw. As his name suggests, Hunter grew up hunting and fishing in and around Manapouri and lake Te Anau.

Hunter spent 20 years earning a living from venison recovery, both as a ground shooter with pack horses and in the adrenaline-filled business of helicopter recovery.

He went on to become a DOC Ranger and skippered the GV Renown as it took scientists and archeologists on research and conservation projects around the Fiordland National Park.

When redundancy struck, Hunter Shaw acquired his marine ticket and became a tour boat operator and for the last 9 years a Milford track guide.

Now, 5 years on from a tussle with Leukemia, this gentle giant, who does a bit of massage therapy on the side, acknowledges that he has found spiritual sustenance in the area in which he lives and works.
