Germany has begun preparations for the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther protesting against the largesse of the Catholic Church, and thus giving birth to Protestantism. John Laurenson travels to Luther’s home town, Wittenberg, to find out the role of the Lutheran church in Germany today, and how it has shaped the character of the country. At a recent synod the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, whose father was a Lutheran pastor, said the anniversary was a time for Germany’s Protestants and Catholics to find a common faith, but after 500 years how possible is that?
